NEW OPERA #MOTHERLAND GETS SET FOR PREMIER IN 2017

unnamed-2

MOTHERLAND is an interdisciplinary theatre work conceived & directed by MUMBI TINDYEBWA, written by MOTION and composed by DAVID MESIHA.  Featuring a cast of seven women’s voice, MOTHERLAND explores the African mother’s encounter with the ‘other’ from historical realties to modern day phenomenon of international adoption.

From it’s sold-out workshop production during the 2014 BAND/TD Then & Now Festival, to it’s extensive theatrical development in conjunction with Toronto’s renowned Obsidian Theatre Company,  this site-specific opera brings together powerful collaborators from the worlds of theatre, music, dance and multi-media.

Join us for the final workshop presentation of MOTHERLAND as we gear up for our premier production in 2017!

RSVP here http://evite.me/7gTMNZ8HsA for our special presentation on Sunday September 19th, 2016 at KABIN, 11 Carlaw, Unit 6, Toronto, 4:30 PM. SPACE IS LIMITED.

MOTION TEACHES NEW SPOKEN WORD COURSE AT YORK UNIVERSITY THIS FALL

40 dayz

Poet, playwright & spoken word artist MOTION joins the Faculty of the Culture and Expression  Program at York University and launches her debut course. GRIOTS TO EMCEES: Culture, Performance and Spoken Word, explores the form, function and content of Spoken Word, in terms of language, rhythm, historical developments, social- political contexts, as well as key artists of poetry, rap, dub, slam, lyricism and spoken word as live and direct purveyors of culture. Students examine performance as text and artist/creator narratives, commentaries and cultural discourse, and survey the continuum through African storytelling traditions to contemporary global evolutions of lyricism and spoken word. Students will explore the various modes of aural dissemination – the stage, the page, audio recording, theatre, film and digital media – and analyze orality and voice as tools of cultural affirmation and resistance. The course includes a writing/performance intensive component.

[SLOTKIN LETTER REVIEW] ORALTORIO: A THEATRICAL MIXTAPE

14 web

“Oraltorio, A Theatrical Mixtape is compelling, throbbing and pulsating with life.”

The wondrous Motion tells in rap, hip hop and popping poetry black history from slavery to fist in the air, emphasising Black Lives Matter always. Motion is constantly in motion emoting emotion and passion, her words are pointed and crisp in the microphone, no mic-drop here. The whole show is a “BOOM.”

Aiding and abetting, laid-back and cool is DJ L’Oqenz, who is eloquent in turning the turntables, creating sound that pulses and pricks the air, underscoring the poetry that pricks the brain and heart.

Mumbi Tindyebwa directs with the ebb and flow of liquid, never jarring, always enhancing.

REVIEW: ORALTORIO: AN AMBITIOUSLY DIFFERENT MIXTAPE OF MUSIC, POETRY & THEATRE

1 web“Tell them we’re coming,” Motion loudly proclaims to the audience; and indeed, you need to know these two talented women are coming your way. Channeling the personas of BGirls to blues women and everything in between, Motion and L’Oqenz perform masterfully and with an honesty that makes their performance personal and moving… The true theatricality of the show lies with the innovative production elements used to transform the space. With such a simple set of only a few white boxes and hanging sections as a backdrop, the lighting (designed by Andre du Toit) and video projections (designed by Ramon Charles) easily transport audiences into the world of the show and create an impressive stage picture that is both compelling and complementary to the overall production.”        -Alexandra Caprara, The Theatre Reader

ORALTORIO EXPLORES HISTORY AND IDENTITY THROUGH MUSIC, ON STAGE AT THE THEATRE CENTRE IN TORONTO

Oraltorio Box and Alley - web

photo: Zahra Siddiqui

“With the sound mixed live and the frequent use of projections, this piece is technically complex, but the execution is so seamless that everything feels immediate and organic. It’s actually quite amazing just how smoothly it all flows. This feels so off-the-cuff and yet director Mumbi Tindyebwa has crafted perfectly realized moments where body, voice, soundscape and background imagery align with masterful precision.”

MOTION TALKS JAY Z’S DECODED & DALTON HIGGINS RAP N ROLL ON CBC RADIO

motion-rap-n-roll-620

photo: Zahra Siddiqui

MOTION is a columnist on CBC Radio’s The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers, reviewing everything from the Anthology of Rap to Carolyn Cooper’s Global Reggae. With an eye and ear to literary mash ups, she now compares Jay Z’s Decoded and Rap N Roll: Pop Culture Darkly Stated by Dalton Higgins. Read an excerpt below, and listen to her latest interview on CBC.

“Toronto’s own Dalton Higgins is a journalist and longtime music writer as well as a pop culture theorist and a cultural curator. I’d call him a “freelance forecaster” too, because he really has always looked at what’s the next step, what’s the future. It’s Toronto, and the space of Toronto really plays in every page of this book. He talks about writing on the TTC, about being a black father who is raising a daughter who’s growing up taking the digital age for granted and him now being this bridge between these two worlds, the analogue and the digital. I’d call it a literary remix of style, and that’s how it connects to Jay Z’s book. It’s part essay collection, part memoir, part creative nonfiction and even kind of a Toronto travelogue.”

Oraltorio: a Theatrical Mixtape
April 29 to May 12 2016 at Theatre Centre

#ORALTORIO: a Theatrical Mixtape is a coming of age story that traces the personal and collective journey of Northside-born girls-to-women as they grapple with identity, migrate through their histories, and manifest their lineages through ancient, contemporary, and Afro-futuristic soundscapes; finding the multi-layered voices of the B Girl and the DJ, as the traditional storyteller and drummer are reborn in their beats and rhymes.

#ORALTORIO riffs on a spoken word suite and a musical mixtape, fusing the worlds of an emcee/poet, DJ/composer and theatre director. Directed by MUMBI TINDYEBWA of It’s a Freedom Thing (ift) Theatre, ORALTORIO is written by MOTION (playwright/ performer), with sound design and composition by DJ L’OQENZ (producer/DJ). Choreography is by ROGER C. JEFFREY.

Oraltorio: a Theatrical MiXtape is produced by MotionLive Collective, ift Theatre and Dave Crawford of Newace Entertainment.

Oraltorio is presented as part of the RISER Project 2016, a collaborative producing model by Why Not Theatre.

The new work brings together an an amazing team of inter-artistic talent that includes: Saccha Dennis (Assistant Director), Mel Hague (Dramaturge), Tara Mohan (Stage Manager), Mariuxi Zambrano (Costume Designer), Jackie Chau (Set & Props Designer), David Meshia (Associate Sound Designer), Ramon Charles (Video Designer), Remington North (Associate Video Designer), Andrew du Toit (Lighting Designer), Jeff Jones (Production Manager), Grace Phan (Production Assistant),  and Suzanna Derewicz (Social Media Manager).
